Update on SNO+

In its programme prioritisation exercise in December 2009, STFC announced that it would not be able to support UK participation in the SNO+ neutrino experiment in Sudbury, Canada, though future participation was not ruled out should circumstances improve. STFC is now pleased to announce that it will be possible to provide bridging support for UK involvement in SNO+ at a very minimal level for the next two and a half years so as to allow the further development of that effort.

The decision to provide this support recognises that SNO+ was the only alpha-4 ranked project in the PPAN programme not to be recommended for funding. The UK collaboration has worked hard to reduce the resources requested and has secured additional support from SNOLAB, for which we are very grateful. We believe that this outcome delivers excellent scientific value for money for the UK and allows our scientists to participate in a world-class experiment that addresses some of the fundamental questions of the universe.
