History

Jim joined Daresbury Laboratory in 1989 as an accelerator physicist and became the Group Leader for the Magnetics and Radiation Sources Group when it was created in 2002.

He has worked on a wide variety of accelerator topics but has particular expertise in insertion devices and other magnets for accelerators. Jim has designed several undulators and multipole wigglers that have been used successfully on many light sources. This interest led to him leading the International Linear Collider Positron Source Team for a number of years.

As the group leader Jim takes an interest in all the research areas of the group, from free electron lasers to fast pulsed kicker magnets. One area in which he has a special interest in at the moment is the development of permanent magnet based quadrupoles for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) at CERN. The group recently filed a patent on their novel magnet design solution.

Jim also leads the development and exploitation of electron test facilities for ASTeC. He is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool.
