The Accelerator Physics Group
, led by Deepa Angal-Kalinin
, has established skills in design, simulation, commissioning and operation of a wide range of electron accelerator projects for applied as well as basic research. The members of the group have expertise in theoretical and experimental investigations of beam dynamics of photoinjectors, light sources and lepton colliders. The group has specialisation in other unique areas such as photocathode physics, low emittance tuning and collimation designs, all skills required for future challenging high brightness applications.
At Daresbury Laboratory, the group is responsible for design and commissioning of ALICE (Accelerators and Lasers In Combined Experiments), a 35 MeV superconducting energy recovery linac which drives an infra-red Free Electron Laser (FEL) as well as coherant THz radiation.
ALICE also feeds beam into EMMA (Electron Machine of Many Applications), the world's first non-scaling FFAG (Fixed Field Alternating Gradient) accelerator. In 2011, this proof-of-principle machine validated the science behind this new type of particle accelerator, leading the way for future projects in the areas of cancer therapy, safer nuclear reactors, and muon accelerators.
The group has designed the EBTF
(Electron Beam Test Facility), a high performance photo-injector, utilising space in the ex-SRS outer hall, and is designing CLARA
, a future FEL test facility. Photoinjector and photocathode research
to deliver and manipulate ultra high brightness beams is one of the major research areas that the group is dealing with.
The members of the group are contributing to the beam dynamics of HiLumi LHC
