STFC Innovations Ltd

STFC Innovations Limited is the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s wholly-owned technology commercialisation company.

It has the exclusive rights to the commercial exploitation of STFC’s intellectual property (IP) from its Rutherford Appleton and Daresbury Laboratories and UK Astronomy Technology Centre. It can also provide unique access to the IP and expertise of the European Space Agency and CERN through business incubation centre partnerships.

Since its creation, STFC Innovations Limited has spun out 16 companies based on STFC technology including:

  • Microvisk which is using a tiny MEMS system created for nano-robots in space to develop micro electro mechanical sensors which will improve the management and ease of testing for monitoring patients’ Warfarin treatment for the international medical market.
  • Cobalt Light Systems which creating a range of Raman instruments for non-invasive laboratory and industrial analysis of materials in medical and security markets using technology which can rapidly and accurately measure chemical composition without touching or changing the sample.
